Discover the rich history and cultural significance of pounamu, also known as greenstone or jade, with this amazing Jade Carving tour at Mountain Jade in Rotorua. In the stunning studio, experience the magic of the craft for yourself and step inside the jade carving studio where you will witness the creativity and skill of local artists and immerse yourself in the process from start to finish. Renowned New Zealand artists Tamaora Walker and Akapita Scally will spend one-on-one time with you, sharing their knowledge and expertise, and guide you through the intricate process of designing, cutting, carving, sanding, and polishing. Uncover the traditional uses and values of the stone before selecting your very own piece of New Zealand jade from a variety of shapes and sizes and learn how to string it into a necklace to treasure forever.

How It Works
  • You will begin your tour in the Mountain Jade Rotorua educational space, where you will learn the history and significance of New Zealand pounamu
  • You will then be invited into the carving studio to meet local artists and see a jade carving demonstration
  • Afterwards, you will select your own piece of pounamu to string into a necklace

  • The experience starts at 10am, 7 days a week

  • This experience will take approximately 30 minutes

  • The machinery used in the live jade carving demonstration can be loud and high-pitched. People with sensitive hearing may be affected. Disposable earplugs are provided
